When my neighbor, who was a WWII veteran, was killed by a school bus and it was covered up by the school superintendent and the King County Sheriff I decided to run for school board.
I also wanted to have a platform to lobby for Federal Way to get rid of the King County Sheriff Department and have our own police department.
The woman in charge of the school board called me at home and said I could never get elected on a one issue campaign and invited me to her home to show me how I could get elected.
I thanked her but said I was running only to have a platform.
I was successful.
The good people of Federal Way voted overwhelmingly to kick the crooked King County Sheriff Department out of town.
The Federal Way school superintendent resigned even though he had just signed a lucrative contract extension.
The Federal Way schools became a model for the nation when they hired a new superintendent who was a renowned business leader. He went on to become the first president of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
King County Sheriff Montgomery and Lt. Bob Evans both wrote scathing letters to the editor about me.
It didn't matter. The public had been heard and was rid of them.
